  • To measure leaf chain, follow these steps:
  • Determine the pitch: Measure the distance between the centers of two adjacent pins. This is the most crucial measurement for identifying the chain.
  • Count the number of plates: Count the inner, intermediate, and outer plates to determine the chain’s lacing configuration.
  • Measure pin diameter: Use calipers to measure the diameter of the chain’s pins.
  • Measure plate thickness: Measure the thickness of the link plates.
  • Measure overall width: Measure the width of the chain across its plates.
  • Identify the series: Based on the measurements, determine if it’s an AL (American Light), EL-LL (European Light – Leaf Light), or BL-LH (Leaf Heavy) series

Forklift chains are typically made of strong alloy steel to withstand the loads they carry.

To properly inspect a forklift chain, follow these steps:

  • Perform daily visual inspections as part of the pre-operation check. Look for obvious signs of damage or wear.
  • Check for broken links, rust, or corrosion. If present, the chain should be replaced immediately.
  • Examine pins for protrusion or turning. This can be caused by lack of lubrication and may lead to chain failure.
  • Look for cracks or enlarged holes in the chain plates. These indicate stress, corrosion, or overloading.
  • Check for misalignment, which can be identified by enlarged holes on outside plates or worn-down pinheads.
  • Use a chain gauge to measure elongation. If elongation exceeds 3%, the chain should be replaced. This 3% elongation translates to a 15% reduction in chain strength.
  • Inspect chain tension, but do not place hands inside the mast. Use a stick or other device to check tension safely.
  • Ensure the chain is properly lubricated at all times with SAE 30 motor oil or equivalent.
  • Have a professional assessment done annually, in addition to daily operator inspections.

If any issues are found, tag the forklift out of service until the chain can be replaced by a trained mechanic.
